CELEBRATING 50++ YEARS OF STEM SUPPORT

Highlights from the combined Symposium and Scholar Awards Celebration included five roundtable discussions with topics ranging from “What Ethical Philosophical Boundaries should we place on AI” to “What future might the James Webb Space Telescope open for humanity.” Moderators for these roundtables included industry and science education leaders as well as ARCS Scholars from the 2021-22 cohort. The round tables were very popular, with standing room only in some cases, and guests took opportunities to ask many questions. The roundtables indeed proved to be illuminating and stimulating exchanges. “Scholar Row” featured a display of 76 scholar posters, with scholars on hand and eager to engage and share their research with guests. Click here  to see scholar posters. The evening’s program included remarks from Stéphane Bancel, CEO of Moderna. Since 1970, the Northern California Chapter has funded more than 2,900 Scholar Awards totaling over $23.6M. For the academic year 2021-22 the Chapter provided over $1m to 76 ARCS Scholars at six universities in Northern California (San Francisco State University, Stanford University, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC San Francisco, and UC Santa Cruz). Our latest university partner, UC Merced, will have ARCS Scholars in the 2022-23 academic year.

“The brilliance and curious minds of ARCS Scholars at work gives hope and promise for our increasingly complex and problem-filled future. They are seeking THAT which will make life better on this planet – and beyond. To support them through ARCS gives me a great personal sense of purpose and satisfaction. Plus, they are quite remarkable when you get to know them, even a teensy bit.”   - Jerry DiVecchio, ARCS Scholar Relations Co-Chair

“From climate science to healthcare to transportation, the need to address the world’s grand challenges has never been greater. NVIDIA’s ability to advance work in these fields relies on great talent. The work of the Northern California chapter of ARCS to support students from diverse backgrounds is vital to help the world reach new frontiers.” - Jensen Huang, Founder and CEO of NVIDIA

Since 1970, ARCS Northern California has been raising funds for science scholars at select Northern California universities. We are proud to have granted more than 2,900 awards and to have made a difference in the lives of scholars.
