SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT: FIONA LAWLER

At our Chapter Annual Meeting in May, we enjoyed a presentation from ARCS Scholar Fiona Lawler. Fiona is in the Department of Geography in Resource Management & Environmental Planning at San Francisco State University. Her work focuses on the intersectionality of humans and the environment, with an emphasis on sustainability. Her current research focus is to determine the success and sustainability of the San Pedro Creek restoration project by analyzing the stream channel dimension, whether the restoration structures are still functioning as intended, and whether natural log and coarse sediment recruitment could support a process-based restoration.

Fiona is an enthusiastically active teacher, and does so currently for the Introduction to Environmental Science Lab at San Francisco State University. She Is also an embedded tutor for Geography classes at her former community college, where she gets to share her knowledge and passion about the subject with others.

Fiona was born and grew up in Germany until the family moved to the Sacramento area, where she completed her last year of high school. She’s fluent in three languages, English, Dutch, and German. She developed her interest in science, especially geography in terms of earth’s natural processes and human influence on the environment, while in high school. After completing her Master’s degree, Fiona would like to pursue a career in teaching at middle and high school levels and also at the community college level. Her passion for geography is something that she aims to pass along to future generations.
