Symposium featured research posters and oral presentations from ARCS Scholars and honored Sandy Robertson, a pioneer in technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship
San Francisco, Calif. (April 29, 2019) – The Northern California Chapter (NCC) of ARCS® Foundation held its fifth annual Scholar Symposium on Monday April 29, 2019 in the Jeanne Robertson Auditorium at Mission Bay, UCSF. It featured research by 74 ARCS Scholars in STEM disciplines from 6 northern California universities in a poster session. Dr. Jeremy Reiter, ARCS NCC Science Advisor, moderated oral presentations by six scholars. In addition, President Chris Brent presented the ARCS American Pacesetter Award to Sandy Robertson, a pioneer in technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
THE VOTES ARE IN: This event was declared a total success – “best yet”, “just fabulous”, “professional”, “inspiring science”, “a triumph” and “incredibly fun” by ARCS members and guests alike. Almost 150 guests engaged ARCS Scholars in 1:1 dialogue during the poster session, and asked probing questions of the six Scholars giving oral presentations on topics ranging from listening to dark matter of the universe to the importance of calcium bursts in immune responses. The presentation of the Pacesetter award to Sandy Robertson filled all with respect for one of the true pioneers of the Silicon Valley. When asked what it was like when he started, he had nice things to say about being an immigrant. His advice to the ARCS Scholars was to go to the best place to answer the most critical questions, and to be passionate about finding the answers.
Co-Chairs Susan Pelosi and Jo Whitehouse thought the event lived up to the reason you should attend, as articulated by Dean Elizabeth Watkins at UCSF – “because it is the best SCIENCE talent show around!” They thanked all who attended and all who made it happen. For those of you who missed it, they said “you have another chance next year on Monday April 27, 2020!”
