2018-2019 Scholar of Note Erin Garcia de Jesus, UC Santa Cruz

Posted on Wednesday, January 30, 2019

Congratulations to Erin Garcia de Jesus, our *Scholar of Note for the scholar class of 2018-2019! Erin is a microbiologist turned science writer, inspired by remarkable writers like David Quammen, Carl Zimmer and Mary Roach. While earning her Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Washington, she realized her strengths lay in communicating science and decided to change career paths. She is fascinated by viruses that are transmitted between animals and humans, but is keen to write about all types of science. Erin hopes to learn how to be an immersive and informative communicator during her time at UC Santa Cruz. Her stories have appeared in multiple outlets, including Science, the San Jose Mercury News and Stanford University News service. Outside of science, she is an avid reader and bicyclist who loves spending time in the sunshine.

*Our Scholar of Note serves as the point person for the scholar class cohort, connecting scholars from their year to ARCS and sharing information about events, research, and scholar news
