ARCS NCC Attends Breakfast with Women Who Lead in Life Sciences

Posted on Friday, March 1, 2019

On March 1, ten amazing ARCS members attended the San Francisco Business Times event – “Women Who Lead in Life Sciences”.  Marlena Jackson, Founder and Executive Director of NexGeneGirls and a scientist at Genentech was interviewed by Ron Leuty, Biotech and Sports reporter for the San Francisco Business Times.  Marlena described what inspired her to form this organization that started as a grassroots organization committed to empowering young women of color from under-represented communities to see themselves in science, engineering, technology, and math (STEM) professions during high school providing paid summer internships at several Bay Area biotech companies and universities.  It is quite a story (www.nexgenegirls.org ); check it out.  Then she introduced seven participants who described their research project and the Principal Investigator of the lab.  Here they are – with Stacy Holland.  We were all blown away!  We also heard from a panel of six extraordinary women leaders in biotech who spoke honestly and openly about their journeys.  All have risen to the top of the ladder, balancing work and family; interestingly they each thanked those who had helped them along the way (may be something to remember whether you are male or female).  AND they gave advice:  be competent and confident; learn from your mistakes – and try again; be curious and collaborative; be an active listener – something women often do better than men; find a mentor and be a mentor to others; develop relationships and trust.  We left the jam-packed room excited, inspired, and even more proud to be a part of ARCS – advancing science in America.  Plus we introduced ARCS to about 50 people who now know about what amazing work we do!
